Everyone wants a healthy smile, but not everyone knows how to have one. It’s amazing how much your oral care routine can make or break your smile health; fortunately, it’s never too late to dust off those skills and find out what you can do to take better care of your oral health. Our Kenosha, WI, general dentist, Dr. Mario Maritato, is here with some helpful and easy recommendations:

Use Fluoride Toothpaste

When you walk through the toothpaste aisle it may feel rather daunting. After all, why would someone need all of these different kinds of toothpastes? Of course, there are some toothpastes that offer whiter teeth or fresher breath, but if you want one that will truly keep teeth and gums healthy then you’ll want to look for the ADA seal of approval before purchasing.

Brushing is Crucial

While most people understand the importance of brushing (at least, we hope people do by now!) not everyone takes the time out that they need to in order to care for their smile. Are you brushing at least twice a day? When you do brush your teeth, are you brushing for at least 2 minutes? If you didn’t answer yes to these questions, then it’s time to reevaluate your oral routine.

Don’t Skip Flossing

We know that flossing takes even more time out of your schedule, but it’s absolutely crucial if you want a healthy, cavity-free smile (and we know you do!). Brushing won’t be able to effectively remove plaque and food from between teeth, but flossing can. If you don’t floss, you are leaving your teeth and gums prone to decay and gum disease, so remember to floss every day to keep your smile healthy.

Swap Out Your Toothbrush

A toothbrush isn’t meant to last forever. Go ahead and take a look at your toothbrush right now. Are the bristles looking a bit tattered and frayed? If so, then it’s time you tossed that toothbrush head away and replaced it. You should be replacing your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months.
