Find out how easy and relaxing your Kenosha dentist could make your next dental procedure.
What is sedation dentistry?
The main purpose of sedation dentistry is to offer medication that helps reduce anxiety in our patients before their dental procedure. This is not considered sleep dentistry, however, as we are not putting patients under. In fact, patients are still awake during this experience; however, sedation can often make patients tired, drowsy or even fall asleep.
What are the different kinds of sedation dentistry?
The two most popular forms of sedation dentistry are oral sedation and inhalation sedation. Oral sedation comes in the form of an anti-anxiety prescription medication, and the level of relaxation you receive with oral sedation will depend on your level of anxiety prior to your procedure. Most oral sedation offers mild to moderate effects.
Inhalation sedation places a mouthpiece over the patient’s face and administers a continuous flow of nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”). Inhaling this gas immediately relaxes and calms the patient. What often makes nitrous oxide an ideal sedation option is that the effects wear off quickly after the gas is no longer administered, which means patients usually can drive themselves home after the procedure.
When can sedation dentistry be used?
Most people think that sedation dentistry can only be used during more in-depth dental procedures. While you can opt for sedation dentistry if you are having a more aggressive treatment, surgery or multiple treatments at once, you can also choose to have sedation dentistry even if having a routine cleaning stresses you out. The goal of sedation is to make your next dental visit easier, so if even routine exams overwhelm you and leave you anxious, then talk to your Kenosha dentist about your sedation options.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Sedation dentistry has been around for decades and is considered very safe when used properly. Oral sedation is only administered in small doses, and when used correctly is a safe and effective way to induce relaxation in nervous patients. Talk to your Kenosha dentist about potential side effects of oral sedation.
Nitrous oxide is also extremely safe and has virtually no side effects. This is mostly because the effects wear off almost immediately after the gas is no longer being administered. This can be an ideal option for someone who needs to return to their daily activities immediately after their dental procedure.
Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?
Anyone who has a dental fear or phobia is ideal for sedation dentistry; however, that’s not all! Those who suffer from sensitive gag reflexes, those who have problems sitting in one position for long periods of time, those receiving multiple procedures at once and even those with special needs could benefit from the calming effects that sedation dentistry offers.
